Disputes in Israeli cabinet over Gaza war costs
The Israeli Radio and Television Authority stated that the Ministry of War has surpassed its allocated budget due to the ongoing and expanding Gaza war, with costs reaching 15 billion shekels (approximately $4.1 billion), leading to sharp disputes with the Ministry of Finance.
The authority explained that during Sunday’s security cabinet meeting, the Ministry of War informed the cabinet that its expenses this year have reached 15 billion shekels, exceeding the planned amount, primarily due to the escalation of the Gaza war.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance of the occupying regime estimates that if the war continues, the financial deficit could rise to 25 billion shekels (about $7 billion) by the end of the year.
According to the media, during a meeting between Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and the Director-General of the Ministry of War (whose name was not mentioned), a verbal altercation occurred over mutual accusations regarding cost management.
The authority reported that during the discussion, Smotrich expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “You do whatever you want.” He accused the security establishment of overstepping its authority and spending without oversight, despite prior budget allocations.
The Director-General of the Ministry of War responded, “I expect your support since you are part of the cabinet.” He noted that the minister himself is involved in decisions related to the war.
According to the Israeli economic newspaper The Marker, the budget for the Israeli Ministry of War for 2025 has reached approximately 136 billion shekels (equivalent to $37 billion), making it the most expensive ministry in the cabinet.
