Victory of Venezuela’s ruling party in parliamentary elections

The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela announced that the ruling party, under Maduro’s leadership, triumphed in the parliamentary and regional elections.
These elections took place less than a year after Venezuela’s presidential election, in which Maduro emerged victorious.
Carlos Quintero, deputy of the Venezuelan electoral board, announced in a televised speech that the coalition of parties supporting Maduro won over 80% of the votes for parliamentary seats.
Quintero stated that the same coalition secured governorships in 22 out of Venezuela’s 23 states. According to him, voter turnout for the election of 24 state governors and 285 legislators was 8.9 million people, out of approximately 21 million eligible voters.
Opposition candidates won only one governorship, a decrease from the four governorships they secured in 2021.
According to Reuters, some key opposition leaders in Venezuela boycotted Sunday’s elections in protest of the official results of the July 2024 presidential election, which the opposition claims they won.
The results of Sunday’s parliamentary elections will keep the ruling party in control of the Attorney General’s Office and the Supreme Court, whose members are appointed by the legislature.
