Only 4 bakeries for 2.4 million people in Gaza

Abdulnasser Ajrami, head of the Gaza Strip Bakers’ Union, announced today (Saturday) that only four out of 25 bakeries contracted with the World Food Programme are operational.
According to the Palestinian news agency “Safa,” Ajrami stated that these four bakeries are functioning in the Deir al-Balah area in central Gaza, while the Israeli army has prevented several main bakeries in other areas from operating.
Ajrami noted that in Khan Younis, due to difficult security conditions, continuous bombardment, and the displacement of most residents, no active bakeries remain.
He added that one bakery in the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza operated for only one day before closing due to chaos and the overwhelming influx of hungry people.
Ajrami explained that the Nuseirat bakery was forced to return its raw materials to the World Food Programme.
Regarding bakeries in northern Gaza, he said most have been targeted, and the remaining ones are unable to operate due to the escalating war and continuous bombardment.
He emphasized that out of a total of 140 bakeries, only 50 remain undamaged. Of these, the status of 25 bakeries contracted with the World Food Programme is known, but the fate of the other 25 bakeries has been unclear since last March.
