Severe divisions in Israel following appointment of new Shin Bet chief

Netanyahu’s appointment of Zini has sparked significant controversy and protests, described as a challenge to the judiciary and in defiance of its ruling. Israel’s High Court stated yesterday that the decision to dismiss Ronen Bar was “inappropriate and contrary to the law.”
Gali Baharav-Miara, the cabinet’s legal advisor, stated that Netanyahu violated legal requirements by appointing a new Shin Bet chief, noting a potential conflict of interest in the decision-making process.
Israel’s Radio and Television Authority emphasized that the military leadership was caught off guard by Netanyahu’s decision and expressed dissatisfaction with it. According to the report, Major General Eyal Zamir, the Chief of Staff, was informed of Zini’s appointment only three minutes before the Prime Minister’s Office made the announcement, with no prior consultation.
Yair Lapid, leader of Israel’s opposition, called on David Zini to publicly declare that he cannot accept the appointment until the High Court issues its ruling. Lapid wrote on X: “Netanyahu is in a serious conflict of interest. I call on General Zini to announce that he cannot accept this appointment until the High Court rules on the matter.”
Benny Gantz, a former member of Israel’s war cabinet, stated that Netanyahu, by ignoring the legal advisor’s guidelines and appointing the Shin Bet chief, “has crossed another red line.” Gantz added: “Netanyahu has once again undermined the rule of law, pushing Israel toward a constitutional crisis and harming its security. Appointing Zini without coordination with the Chief of Staff will cause significant damage to the security services.”
Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the “Yisrael Beiteinu” party, also stated that Netanyahu’s meeting with a general without informing the Chief of Staff is a severe blow to both the military and its leadership. Lieberman said Netanyahu’s actions violate the values and principles of the army, accusing him of continuing to subordinate Israel’s security to personal and political interests.
Following Netanyahu’s decision, Israelis took to the streets in Tel Aviv on Thursday night to protest the appointment. According to published videos, clashes occurred between Israeli police and protesters, with at least four demonstrators arrested.
