The death penalty for the individual who attacked the Republic of Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran was carried out
At 8 a.m. on February 7, 2023, an armed individual attacked the Republic of Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran, resulting in the death of one Azerbaijani national and injuries to two others.
Immediately after the incident, the acting head of the Tehran Criminal Prosecutor's Office was present at the scene and stated that initial investigations indicated the individual attacked the embassy with personal motives.
In preliminary investigations, the accused claimed: "In April of this year, my wife visited the Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran and never returned home."
He explained his motive for the attack as follows: "I thought my wife was at the Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran and was unwilling to meet me. I decided to go to the embassy with a Kalashnikov rifle I had previously acquired."
Upon completion of judicial investigations at the Tehran Criminal Prosecutor's Office, the Tehran Prosecutor's Office requested the maximum penalty for the accused on charges including direct involvement in the intentional murder of an Azerbaijani national using a firearm inside the embassy, illegal purchase, transport, and possession of weapons and ammunition (including one Kalashnikov rifle and one handgun), and disrupting public order.
Following the issuance of the indictment and its referral to the court, several hearings were held regarding the charges against the perpetrator of the attack on the Azerbaijan Embassy, attended by the accused and their lawyers.
After the case was reviewed, the court issued a death penalty verdict for the individual who attacked the Republic of Azerbaijan Embassy, and the case was sent to the Supreme Court for confirmation of the verdict.
With the confirmation of the verdict by the Supreme Court, the death penalty for the individual was carried out this morning.
