Hungarian parliament approves withdrawal from International Criminal Court

The bill, passed by the Hungarian Parliament, initiates the country’s exit from the ICC. This move, supported by the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, begins a one-year process that will formally end Hungary’s participation in the ICC.
According to a report published on the Hungarian Parliament’s website, the decision was approved with 134 votes in favor and 37 against.
The Hungarian government first announced its intention to withdraw from the ICC on April 3, a few days after Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary for an official trip. This was one of Netanyahu’s rare trips abroad since the issuance of the arrest warrant against him for war crimes committed during the Gaza genocide.
Zsolt Semjén, Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister, who introduced the bill, claimed that Hungary firmly rejects the use of international organizations, particularly criminal courts, as tools for political influence.
