Europe cheers the anti-Trump Liberal victory in Canada

According to the Canadian Public Broadcasting Network (CBC), the Canadian Liberals led by Prime Minister Mark Carney won the Canadian federal election on Monday. Experts say this is a remarkable comeback, which was partly due to the tariff policies of US President Donald Trump and his attacks on Canada.
Just a few months ago, the ruling Liberal Party, now led by Mark Carney, was on the path to a historic defeat. But this is the fourth consecutive term of the Liberals to form a government since 2015.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, congratulated Prime Minister Mark Carney on the victory of the Liberal Party of Canada in the parliamentary elections. “I look forward to working closely with this country,” von der Leyen told the online service Bluesky on Tuesday. “The bond between Europe and Canada is strong and will only get stronger.”
According to preliminary results, the Liberals won the most votes in Canada’s election on Monday, in line with consensus forecasts. However, it is not yet clear whether Carney’s party will have a majority in parliament when all votes are counted.
Carney, 60, succeeded longtime Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in March and has focused his campaign entirely on Trump, criticizing his policies.
“We will defend our shared democratic values, promote multilateralism and support fair and free trade,” von der Leyen wrote in Bluesky.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also congratulated Carney on his victory in the Canadian parliamentary election. He wrote on his page on X: "Canada and Germany are not only economically, but also in terms of values. Canada can count on close friends and allies in Europe and Germany."
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also told Carnetbrücke about the victory of the Liberal Party of Canada in the parliamentary election. Rutte told the online service X on Tuesday: "I look forward to working together to build a stronger and fairer alliance." He added: "This includes investing more in defense and increasing industrial production so that we have what we need for our security."
French President Emmanuel Macron also congratulated Carney on his victory in the parliamentary election. Macron wrote on his personal page on X: "You are the embodiment of a strong Canada in the face of today's challenges. France is pleased to further strengthen the friendship between the two countries. He said he looked forward to future cooperation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also congratulated Mark Carney. Zelensky wrote on his personal page on X: “Ukraine highly values its close relations with Canada and the unwavering support of the people of this country. We are confident that our partnership will only grow stronger through the joint pursuit of peace, justice, and security.”
After Carney’s Liberal Party won the Canadian election, China has also shown its willingness to improve bilateral relations. Guo Jiaqun, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Beijing, said on Tuesday that China is willing to develop China-Canada relations on the basis of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also congratulated Carney on his victory and expressed his satisfaction with the strengthening of his country’s relations with Canada.
After winning the election and re-leading the Liberal Party, Mark Carney warned of US threats to Canada’s resources and territory.
In his victory speech, Canada's Liberal Prime Minister told his supporters that Canada would never forget the lessons it learned from America's betrayal.
The outcome of Canada's general election and the Liberal Party's victory are attributed to the party's sharp and angry response to Trump's demands.
