Drone attack on the global Sumud flotilla
Media outlets reported that one of the boats of the Global Sumud Flotilla was struck in a drone attack.
The flotilla announced it would hold a press conference to inform the media and the public about the attack. It stated that although all participants in the attacked vessel are safe, details about the incident remain limited.
The conference will include remarks from Francesca Albanese, members of the steering committee, human rights experts, and first-hand testimonies from those onboard the targeted boat, in addition to updates on the flotilla’s ongoing mission to break the blockade of Gaza.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is considered the largest civilian effort to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza. The attack occurred while one of its main vessels was anchored in Tunisia.
According to Wael Nawar, a member of the flotilla, the strike was carried out by a Zionist regime drone, targeting the flotilla’s largest vessel, which was sailing under the Portuguese flag. He confirmed that none of the crew or passengers were harmed.
Despite the attack and escalating threats, organizers insist the mission will continue, describing it as a historic demonstration of resistance against the ongoing blockade.
The Egyptian committee of the flotilla condemned the incident as a criminal act of aggression by a Zionist military drone and a cowardly escalation of tensions.
The committee described the strike on Tunisian territory as a military violation of an Arab country and reaffirmed that Egypt’s participation in the international flotilla will continue despite these threats.
Warning from UN special rapporteur
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur, confirmed reports that the flotilla’s main vessel had been targeted, noting that she is verifying the details.
She also warned that two other boats en route to Tunisia are in urgent need of protection.
According to an Al Mayadeen correspondent, heavy security measures have been imposed at the port of Tunis following the attack.
