Dutch Islamophobe causes government collapse
After roughly a year of the Dutch coalition government’s operation, Wilders’ Freedom Party, in protest against immigration policies, brought down the country’s coalition government.
This anti-Islam and anti-immigrant politician in the Netherlands toppled the government of Prime Minister Dick Schoof after less than a year in power.
Wilders wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “There is no signature for our asylum plans. No changes to the original plan agreement. The Freedom Party is leaving the coalition.”
Last week, he issued a clear ultimatum to his coalition partners: either sign a comprehensive 10-point anti-immigration plan or face the risk of the coalition’s collapse.
The Dutch anti-Islam politician demanded closing borders with military patrols, rejecting all asylum seekers at entry points, suspending family reunification for recognized refugees, and deporting Syrians with temporary visas.
The Dutch government, a fragile alliance of four parties—Freedom Party, New Social Contract, Citizen-Farmer Movement, and another conservative party—was formed last year after lengthy negotiations, but tensions over immigration ultimately dismantled the coalition.
With Wilders’ withdrawal, Schoof’s current government no longer holds a majority, and new elections are likely to be held.
