Sarkozy receives death threats

Inmates at the Paris prison, where Sarkozy is serving his sentence, reportedly threatened to kill the former president.

According to Reuters, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that Sarkozy, the imprisoned former president of France, has been the target of death threats.

In a statement, the Prosecutor’s Office said that the threats came from an inmate at La Santé Prison in Paris, where Sarkozy began serving his sentence this week, prompting the launch of an official investigation.

The statement added: “On October 22, 2025, the director of La Santé Prison informed the Paris Prosecutor’s Office about a video circulated on social media, clearly filmed by an inmate, in which threats were made as Nicolas Sarkozy entered the prison.”

In the footage, several prisoners can be heard shouting: “We know everything! Sarkozy, return the billions!” while another prisoner yells: “He just arrived — he’s alone in his cell — it’s going to be tough for him.”

According to the Paris Prosecutor’s Office, three inmates have been questioned as part of the investigation, and two mobile phones were seized during a prison search.

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, began his five-year prison sentence last Tuesday after being convicted of criminal conspiracy related to an alleged scheme to finance his election campaign with funds from Muammar Gaddafi.

Two armed police officers have been assigned to protect the former president during his imprisonment — a move that has sparked complaints from French prison guards’ unions.

Upon turning himself in, Sarkozy stated: “I will continue to protest this judicial scandal.” He is the first modern French president to be imprisoned.
