Peru’s president ousted after series of scandals

Peru’s Congress has voted in a late-night session to remove President Dina Boluarte from office following a string of financial, ethical, and political scandals.

During the late-night vote, a majority of lawmakers supported Boluarte’s ouster, citing “permanent moral incapacity” as the official reason, according to a report by Reuters. The accusation stemmed from months of protests, corruption allegations, and widespread public dissatisfaction with her government.

Boluarte did not attend the congressional session and refused to defend herself, a move that allowed lawmakers to expedite the impeachment process.

The Associated Press reported that the vote in favor of removal was overwhelming, with no votes against, and that many factions that had previously backed Boluarte withdrew their support.

Under Peru’s constitution, José Geri Urre, a 38-year-old congressional leader, has been appointed interim president and is required by law to call early elections.

Boluarte’s presidency, which began in December 2022, was marked by intense opposition and controversy. She initially rose to power as Peru’s first female president after the Congress ousted Pedro Castillo.

However, since taking office, she has faced escalating political, security, and ethical crises. One of the most serious allegations involved her government’s role in the violent suppression of protesters during the 2022 demonstrations, which left dozens of dead.

Boluarte was also accused of accepting luxury gifts, including a Rolex watch, allegedly given as bribes.

According to the Financial Times, a separate controversy emerged over claims that she underwent cosmetic surgery (a rhinoplasty) in 2023, during which presidential authority was not formally transferred to Congress.

Rising security concerns further strained her administration. Earlier this year, Peru faced a wave of violence and crime, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency in Lima and the Callao Province.

Following her removal, Boluarte defended her record, saying: “I never acted out of self-interest — my only concern was the people of Peru.”

With her ouster, Boluarte becomes the sixth Peruvian president in less than a decade to leave office before the end of their term.
